About Me

Overworked new mom.

Can’t leave the house without at least one book.

Former ballroom dance instructor.

Masters in Literature but not a book snob. Well, not terribly, anyway.

I will accept most requests for reviews. (I’ll only decline if my schedule is too tight at the moment or if a book seems like a bad fit for my preferences — which are, admittedly, all over the place.) I always review honestly.

Preferred genres:

  • Fiction, literary and otherwise
  • YA
  • Children’s books

No thank you to the following genres:

  • Romance/erotica
  • Paranormal
  • Nonfiction (unless the topic involves the written word…then maybe)
  • Anything involving zombies

Please fill out the following form if you’d like me to review your work.

Note: The FTC requires me to state that some of the books reviewed here were provided by the publisher free of charge. These books are tagged according to the site that facilitated the free copy’s arrival (NetGalley, Goodreads, Edelweiss, LibraryThing). Also, sometimes authors send me their work for review. Here’s what it comes down to: whether I paid for a book or not, I’ll tell you what I really thought of it. And I’ll only gush when I mean it.

Also note: Most of the graphics were provided by publishers, but occasionally they’re from Goodreads.

  1. Hi Kelly. I just wanted to thank you for the review of A Really Awesome Mess. It meant a lot to me to read your expert opinion that we got some important stuff right. I’ve got a new novel coming out: a YA superhero novel. If you’d like to review it, let me know and I’ll get you an electronic copy in the format of your choice. Thanks!

    • Hi, Brendan! Thrilled that you came across my review. I truly enjoyed reading your book; it does a lot to humanize kids that society so often thinks of as bad eggs. I’d be happy to read and review your new novel. And I’m not so good with formats. :-/ I’ve got a Kindle Paperwhite; would that be MOBI, do you know? PDF would be fine as well. (Sorry for my lack of knowledge in this area; I usually use NetGalley or Amazon, so the work’s done for me.)

  2. Hi Kelly,
I’m an indie author/publisher and I wondered if you’d be interested in reviewing either my YA novel (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6658969-hocus-focus) or the first four issues of my satirical YA comic book series (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17982754-valedictorian-usa) which will eventually be compiled in graphic novel format. I can send PDF files if you’re interested.

Thanks for your time and consideration!

  3. Hi Kelly.
I love lit majors! (I’m an English teacher myself). I also have a new book out and I would love an honest review from you.
The Holdout is my fourth novel, and it’s about love, justice, and reality TV. (I pasted in the description down below.) Please let me know if you’re interested. If you are I will give you a copy in the format of your choice.

    Thanks so much!

    Laurel Osterkamp

    Book Description:

Robin wanted to win The Holdout, a cutthroat reality TV show, so she gave it her all, challenge after challenge. Then she fell for Grant, with his irresistible eyes and heartbreaking life story.

But Grant was only using Robin as they competed for a million dollars. Once home, Robin wants to hide from the humiliation as episodes of The Holdout are aired, and she worries her family was right all along; she’s not a survivor.

Yet she could surprise everyone, and have the last laugh.

Besides, Robin now has jury duty. And as she forges ahead, confronting her demons about bravery, justice, and romance, Robin will come to decide which is more important: the courage to stand alone, or the strength to love again.

Laurel Osterkamp’s award winning novels have been hailed as funny, intelligent, snarky and poignant. She is the author of four novels and two novellas, including the November Surprise series, which, like The Holdout, features the Bricker family. Laurel was recently on a federal jury, and she loves watching Survivor.
